Editing our short sequence with dialog.

Today we spent our lesson editing our short sequences with dialog. On top of this we learnt many new techniques when editing with audio as this was our first time.

We split into two groups and made two different edits.

Filming a short sequence with dialog

Today we worked in our coursework groups once again to film a short sequence with dialog/conversation.

Firstly, we went into the studio and quickly learnt how to set up and use the microphones as last time we didn't use dialog and never learnt how to use the microphones. We then went made our way up to the editing suite where we decided to film our sequence and set up the camera and microphone. Next, we came up with a short and simple script before thinking about anything else.

Matilda: "You alright?, how was it?"

Poppy: "How was what?"

Matilda: "Your suspension"

Poppy: "Mate it was awful my parents hate me"

Matilda: "They don't hate you they're your parents"

Poppy: "You wouldn't know"

Matilda: Anyway, I've got class now. I'll speak to you later.

Poppy: Bye!

After some discussion, we decided to shoot our sequence with Poppy sitting on the sofa and Matilda walking over and sitting next to her. This allowed us to shoot shots such as, wide-shots of both Matilda and Poppy, over the shoulder shots whilst they converse and close-up shots of Matilda walking in and close up shots of both their faces.

After we felt we had all the shots we needed we packed up all the equipment and met back up with our teacher.

Learning how to edit in preparation for our opening title sequence

On Friday we edited the short sequence we created on Thursday. We spent the lesson learning various techniques and the basics of how to edit in preparation for our opening title sequence. Matilda and I worked together to edit the short sequence whilst Poppy worked on her own and created a different example of how it could have been edited.

Camera-work workshop

Over the course of this week Fin, Poppy, Matilda and I participated in two camera workshops and an editing workshop. We did this in preparation for our filming day to get the best possible shots we can and to be able to work as efficiently as possible.

The first workshop was about how to assemble the camera and the basics about lighting, zoom and focus.

Here are some photos of the group assembling the cameras.

The second workshop we were giving the task to film a short and simple sequence. We created a sequence in which Matilda walks over to a bag, unzips it and gets her phone out, she then proceeds to briefly check her phone and then put it back into the bag and walk away. We spent the entire workshop gathering as many different shots as we could. We managed to get around two dozen shots such as, close-up on hands, feet and face, wide-shots to establish the sequence and mid-shots showing Matilda getting the phone out of the bag.

Refining details before shoot day

Today we have met as a group for the first time in three weeks. We are going to be refining the details about our opening title sequence, for example, location, camera shot details and sequence name.

We had a detailed discussion about the name of our sequence. We came up with these:

- The Heist - simplistic

- Clover - the idea that the heist group are very lucky - links to a four leafed clover as there are four heist members

- Stung - the heist group stings the country every time they perform a heist - leaving a mark on the country

We also discussed our location and how we would make the background realistic and how to make it so the audience know where it is based. We had two ideas for the location for inside the bank:

- The film studio - the film studio is good as it gives us plenty of space for our close-up and extreme close-up shots however we were debating how easy it would be to get a background that looked realistic for representing the inside of a vault or bank.

- The school pavilion - the pavilion has even more space than the film studio and has grey concrete walls and floor with several concrete beams. We thought this may be good as it looks like a very secure and protected area.

Finally, we spent the rest of the lesson finishing off the script and stage directions for the news reporter.

[Scene opens with a mid-shot of reporter seated behind a desk, dressed formally. On the desk there are props suiting the period for a news studio (e.g. a mug, pens/paper). The reporter begins talking as if the scene opens mid-way through the news reel.]

Reporter: In other news, another report of a break in has been reported leading to the question - are the grand heists back in business? The heist was reported at 3:30 pm today where the first call was made to the local police department by one of the heist members. Officer Timpson gave us this statement -

[Reporter reaches for a sheet of paper, containing the statement and proceeds to read fro the sheet]

Reporter: "I was unable to identify the gender of the caller. However, they informed me that multiple hostages were being held within the bank itself and this crew member negotiated with me that the terms of release for these hostages must result in the crew members walking freely, ensuring to us that no harm came to the hostages. We continue to monitor the wellbeing of the hostages during this time".

[Reporter places sheet down onto the desk, looks back to the main camera]

Reporter: As we receive more information, we will ensure to keep the public figure updated. Police have also advised locals to remain inside until further notice to ensure their safety. The families of the hostages have been informed about the incident and reassured that the heist crew have guaranteed the safety of the hostages

- Continuation of Script -

Reporter: This has now been recorded as their 5th heist of this year alone. In previous events there has been no casualties, as promised by the members within the crew. Therefore, the local police department have stated that they have high hopes for this inconvenience to end well and in a safe manner. This notorious group have remained an issue for the territorial police force for a prolonged period of time, with the first of their heists being recorded 4 years ago.

We now have breaking news coming in live from the scene of the crime, where it appears that the hostages are making their way out of the bank. there seems to be no sign of the crew themselves but members of the families of the hostages are grateful for the safe return of the hostages previously located within the bank as the crew continue working from the inside

[Show heist crew leaving now]

Reporter: The exact current location of the crew within the bank remains unknown, whether or not the crew members are still inside is in question. We will keep our viewers updated as soon as new information is made available by the officers on the scene.

[Heist crew getaway in van scene is shown, accompanies by upbeat rock music]

Reporter: In other news, a 20-year-old woman, named Mathilde Mesquita De Melo [display image of Mathilde on the screen] has recently donated a total of $1,000,000 to a multitude of charities all targeting issues in education and helping disadvantages students financially. More on this story later.

Cast list details

Today we have once again met as a group in person and were able to carry on developing our opening title sequence. We started off by talking about what characteristics and physical attributes we wanted our cast to have.

We began discussing people that would be available and with physical attributes such as, tall, slim, female. We needed these attributes as we have to have girls that look mature.

  • Matilde
  • Ellie
  • Daisy
  • Rachel
  • Tilly
We then discussed possible people to play the role of the news presenter. This wasn't hard as they only have to be an adult, with no specific characteristics.

  • Paul Brown
  • Adam
  • Jake
We then began to develop another shot by shot sequence in order to check we all knew what was happening after not meeting for a long time.
